My colleague Mike recently penned an article about the late great George Carlin and how well his comedy has aged. I absolutely agree George Carlin is possibly more relevant today, even than before. Mike’s article is here and don’t forget to share it with a Carlin fan. Today I am writing to introduce you to three modern day political comedians. If you have not already been introduced to Jimmy Dore, Ron Placone or Graham Elwood do yourself a favor and check out their YouTube channels. The Jimmy Dore Show, The Political Vigilante and Get Your News On With Ron.
Political Comedy in 2019
I have been a big fan of Jimmy Dore’s political comedy since 2015 and have read his book Your Country is Just Not that into You. I hadn’t had the pleasure of hearing Ron or Graham’s stand up comedy until last night. Both comedians rocked the Yacht Club in Iowa City with constant laughter echoing from the basement bar. Ron delved into his personal life and recent engagement creating comedy out of his life with his fiance. Graham joked about being a hippy as well as a strong Chicago personality.
There is no doubt both of these individuals have been doing comedy for sometime now as the jokes and the laughs were organic. What I loved most about the event however was the relevance of the political comedy. Ron invoked Neera Tanden, Joe Biden and the political horse race in general. While Graham mentioned not being able to watch the NFL anymore because of it’s corporate nature and horse race hilarity as well. It was very cathartic and cleansing for anyone who is paying attention.
Why political comedy is needed more than ever
Ron and Graham both excelled at bringing up relevant issues causing the audience of activists and political junkies to erupt in laughter. I spoke to many people as they left the event who expressed feeling invigorated. This is a amazing gift that was given to the audience. In America the media does everything it can to deflate the growing progressive movement. At one point or another it gets to each of us and it is events like this that fight back against the depression.
George Carlin’s greatest gift as a comedian was to allow attendees to release their frustration at the system through his comedy. Whichever aspect of the American club Carlin spoke on. His comedic message always resonated with the audience. In similar fashion everyone who attended last night left with a feeling of solidarity. I submit to my audience if you are feeling down about the process. Consider searching political comedy from one of these individuals, you won’t be disappointed. As always take care of yourselves and have an excellent week.
